    Dr. Hughes is Professor and Chief, Section of Aortic Disease, Divisions of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery & Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, Duke University Medical Center; Director of the Duke Center for Aortic Disease; and Surgical Director of the Duke Center for Structural Heart Disease. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University (1991; Phi Beta Kappa), Duke Medical School (1995; AOA), and the Duke General and Thoracic Surgery residencies. He was a varsity letterman in baseball at Wake Forest.

    His clinical interests include aortic valve and aortic reconstructive surgery including complex aortic valve repair and valve-sparing surgery, branched endograft thoracic endovascular repair, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, in addition to conventional open surgery spanning all segments of the aorta. His research interests focus on clinical outcomes in aortic surgery and he has been a PI on >30 multi-institutional clinical trials, and co-investigator or sub-investigator on numerous others. He was the co-PI on the NIH R-01 “Cognitive effects of body temperature during hypothermic circulatory arrest” examining the impact of temperature on neurocognitive outcomes after arch surgery and is national co-PI on the Gore TBE 25-03 Zone 0/1 post-approval study.

    Dr. Hughes has authored or co-authored >300 peer reviewed publications and book chapters, including serving as STS Co-Chair for the 2020 Type B aortic dissection reporting standards. He is a Senior Editor for Adult Cardiac for The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Annals of Thoracic Surgery Short Reports, as well as guest reviewer for >20 other medical journals including Circulation, JAMA, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

    He is a Councilor-at-Large on the Executive Council of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, a founding member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Aortic Luminaries Club, and on the Program Committees for the AATS Aortic Symposium and International Aortic Symposium.
